Reflecting on Five Years of Leadership

Blogs Anthony Pugliese, CIA, CPA, CGMA, CITP Apr 17, 2026

It is both humbling and significant to mark my fifth anniversary as president and CEO of The IIA. I still recall the sense of pride, responsibility, and excitement I felt when I received the opportunity to step into the role and help lead the internal audit profession.

This milestone is as much a personal one as it is a shared one. I’m extremely proud of the team at The IIA and all that has been accomplished in recent years during a pivotal period for the profession. As I reflect on my time as CEO, I’m most struck by the consistency of our purpose — honoring The IIA’s legacy while continuing to evolve in ways that strengthen our relevance and impact.

Stepping into a leadership role at an organization as established and respected as The IIA requires a careful balance: honoring the traditions that have shaped our profession while remaining focused on what lies ahead. Maintaining this balance is not always easy, but it is essential — particularly in a profession that requires us to serve as stewards of change, always one step ahead.

Over the past five years, that commitment to thoughtful progress has guided our work and upheld our mission. It reflects a clear and consistent focus on advancing the interests of practitioners around the world. Several milestones where we’ve embraced adaptation and innovation stand out:

The launch of the new Global Internal Audit Standards. A foundational resource and north star for the profession, the updated Standards represent an important step in ensuring internal audit remains aligned with the evolving risk landscape and needs of the profession.

Internal Audit: Vision 2035. This global initiative helped chart a new path forward for the profession. By bringing together perspectives from across our community, we outlined key priorities to help our practitioners continue to progress and lead.

The Global Audit Committee Center. Developed in response to a growing need to strengthen alignment at the board level, this initiative reflects our commitment to supporting both practitioners and audit committee members in strengthening governance and oversight.

Continued membership and chapter growth. Actively listening to our global community and adapting to what they need most remains a cornerstone of our success. With more than 265,000 members worldwide, we have continued to expand our reach and strengthen engagement with members around the world.

Looking ahead, I’m energized by the opportunities before us to continue to advance this profession in an era of unprecedented change. The work we do helps shape a global profession that plays a critical role in organizations and society more broadly.

I’m honored to mark five years alongside such a dedicated team, and even more so to serve a global community of professionals who care deeply about the work they do and the impact they make.
